Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington has opened up about her marriage to singer, politician and clergyman Banky W, revealing that their relationship continues to grow stronger nearly a decade after they tied the knot.
Speaking during a recent interview hosted by media personality Teju Babyface, the actress shared insights into how her expectations about marriage were completely different before meeting her husband.
According to Adesua, she had a clear idea of the kind of man she did not want to marry. However, her eventual union with Banky W turned out to be the opposite of those initial preferences.
“Before I met my husband, I told God I didn’t want to marry a musician, a pastor or a politician, but God gave me all three,” she said.
Banky W, whose career spans music, ministry and politics, embodies all the roles Adesua initially hoped to avoid. Despite this, she explained that her decision to marry him was rooted in what she described as divine direction, suggesting that her faith played a central role in her choice.
Reflecting on their journey, Banky W also shared his perspective on how their relationship developed.
He revealed that he had been convinced for a long time that Adesua was meant to be his life partner, even when she did not initially feel the same way.
According to him, he held on to that belief for about a year and a half, patiently waiting for her to come to the same realisation.
He recounted a pivotal moment in their relationship when Adesua reached out to him with a surprising declaration.
“Adesua called me on the phone one day and said, ‘Banky, you know you’re my husband right?’” he said.
At that moment, he explained, reaffirmed his conviction and marked a turning point in their relationship. Shortly after, the couple moved forward with their plans and eventually got married.
Adesua and Banky W’s wedding in 2017 was one of the most celebrated celebrity unions in Nigeria at the time, drawing widespread attention from fans and the media.
Over the years, the couple has remained one of the most admired pairs in the Nigerian entertainment industry, often praised for their openness about love, faith and family.
Their marriage has since been blessed with two children, further strengthening their bond as a family. Despite the demands of their individual careers and public life, both have continued to emphasise the importance of commitment, communication and shared values in sustaining their relationship.
Adesua’s recent reflection highlights how personal expectations can evolve, especially when influenced by faith and lived experiences. Her story also underscores a recurring theme among many couples, that compatibility sometimes emerges in unexpected ways.
For Banky W, the journey appears to have been one of patience and certainty, while for Adesua, it was about trusting a path she initially did not envision for herself.
Nearly a decade on, their relationship continues to resonate with fans as a story of love shaped by belief, persistence and mutual understanding.
