Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, cruised to a resounding victory in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election conducted across the 23 local government areas of Sokoto State.
According to the results announced on Monday by the chief returning officer, Prof. Aminu Abubakar, Atiku defeated his challengers, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and businessman, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
The former Vice President polled a total of 68,823 votes to emerge as the winner of the exercise, Hayatudeen got 319 votes, while Amechi recorded 292 votes.
Abubakar described the exercise as peaceful, adding that a total of 69,434 votes were cast during the primary.
“I therefore hereby declare Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate with the highest number of votes cast in Sokoto,” he said.
The result was announced in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security personnel and party stakeholders, including former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the ADC governorship candidate in the state, Mannir Dan Iya, the Senatorial candidates of Sokoto South, Faruk Malami Yabo and the state party chairman, Abdullahi Maigwandu, among others.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the primary election to choose the ADC presidential candidate for the 2027 election, was held simultaneously across all the 8,809 wards in Nigeria.
