Peter Obi, a former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate has been cleared to participate in the presidential primary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

The clearance was announced on Wednesday by Sam Egwu, the chairman of the party’s national screening committee following the screening exercise held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Egwu, the committee confirmed that Obi satisfied all constitutional and statutory requirements needed to contest the presidential election under the party’s platform.

He said the former governor of Anambra state complied with provisions of the party’s constitution, the electoral act, and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

Reacting after the exercise, Obi disclosed that the screening session lasted more than two and a half hours, during which members of the committee examined his credentials and questioned him on his plans and vision for Nigeria.

The former presidential candidate said the committee reviewed documents including his degree certificates, National Youth Service Corps credentials, and age declarations before issuing him the clearance certificate and presidential nomination form.

Obi also praised the screening panel for what he described as a transparent and professional process, commending the leadership of the party for upholding democratic principles.

The development comes amid growing political consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition parties intensify preparations for party primaries and coalition negotiations.
