Tragedy struck at the Federal University of Education, Kontagora, as a 25-year-old 300-level student, Seyi Simon, was allegedly stabbed to death during a freshers’ party organised for newly admitted students.
PrimeTimes Nigeria learnt that the incident occurred on Saturday night at the institution’s hall in Kontagora, Niger State.
According to Daily Trust, sources disclosed that the fatal incident happened following a confrontation between the deceased and an 18-year-old suspect, Jafar Musa.
The suspect was said to be a member of the Man O’ War unit attached to the institution.
A student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that the altercation began as a minor disagreement before escalating into violence.
“It started as a misunderstanding but later turned into a fight between the two,” Daily Trust quoted the source as saying.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said the suspect stabbed the victim during the fight.
“On April 5, 2026, at about 1:40 a.m., a report was received at ‘A’ Division Kontagora that during a party organised by students for newly admitted students at the school hall, a misunderstanding occurred between one Jafar Musa, 18, of Angwan-Gwari area of Kontagora, and one Seyi Simon, 25, a student of the institution,” he said.
Abiodun disclosed that the injured student was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Kontagora for treatment but was confirmed dead on arrival.
“In the course of the fight, Jafar Musa stabbed the student with a dagger. The victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where he was confirmed dead. The suspect has been arrested and is currently under investigation,” he added.
The police spokesperson said the suspect is in custody while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the killing has since thrown the university community into mourning, with calls for improved security and stricter measures at student events to prevent a recurrence.
