THE Kano State Government on Tuesday commenced activities to mark the 2026 Africa Vaccination Week AVW, reaffirming its commitment to expanding immunisation coverage and integrated health services across the state.
Speaking at a news conference held at the Kano Emergency Operations Centre EOC, Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, said the event underscored the state’s resolve to protect children and families through vaccines and other essential health interventions.
He said this year’s AVW theme is: “For every generation, vaccines work”, emphasised the long-term benefits of immunisation and the need to reach “zero-dose” children, those who have not received any vaccines.
According to him, Kano State is deploying a comprehensive package of services, including deworming, family planning, antenatal care, nutrition screening, HIV counselling, malaria treatment, diarrhoea management and breastfeeding support.
He announced that the state government would formally launch the AVW with a rally and health walk featuring traditional and religious leaders as well as polio survivors to strengthen community mobilisation and caregiver awareness.
Labaran further disclosed that a dedicated AVW data management tool, provided by WHO and UNICEF, would be deployed across all local government areas to ensure real-time monitoring of vaccination coverage and service delivery.
He expressed appreciation to WHO, UNICEF and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation GAVI, for their support, while commending Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for backing the campaign with domestic resources and political will.
The commissioner charged local government chairmen, primary health care teams and data officers to ensure full mobilisation, accurate reporting and safe delivery of services.
He also called on the media to amplify the campaign’s messages and encourage caregivers to embrace immunisation.
“Our expected deliverables are non-negotiable: improved immunisation coverage, integrated service delivery, complete data reporting and advocacy that inspires every parent in Kano State,” he said.
Labaran prayed for Allah’s blessings on the campaign and reaffirmed government’s commitment to safeguarding the health of every child in the state. NAN
