Former Sokoto State Governor and serving senator, Aminu Tambuwal, on Tuesday, cautioned the judiciary against actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that Tambuwal gave the warning while speaking at the national convention of the African Democratic Congress held in Abuja.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives said the country was currently experiencing a critical phase in its democratic journey.
“We are in very interesting times in Nigeria today, where pseudo democrats found their way to power, and they are today, manifestly exposing themselves,” he said.
Tambuwal said his appeal was directed at key institutions, particularly the judiciary, urging them to act with integrity and patriotism.
“My appeal is not to the members of ADC for now, but to those who are living and heading our institutions, particularly, and of very concerned to me, the judiciary,” he said.
He warned judges and justices against being used to subvert democratic processes.
“Let me remind those of you who are living today of the judge that was used to truncate the June 12, 1993 election. Let no judge or justice allow himself to be used to destroy Nigeria,” he added.
Tambuwal stressed that individuals occupying sensitive positions would be judged by history and future generations.
“History is taking note of our roles as individuals. Our children and grandchildren are looking up to us to save this country,” he said.
Tambuwal urged judicial officers to remain accountable and resist external pressures that could compromise their decisions.
“And those of you that are in privileged positions should be accountable and bear in mind that wherever you are writing your judgment or rulings, even if there is no individual by your side, God Almighty is watching over you,” he said.
Tambuwal further warned, “So be wary of those individuals or people that will be talking to you to influence you, to undermine our judicial system, undermine our country and undermine our democracy.”
