On Wednesday, the Senate ordered the urgent delivery of humanitarian supplies to communities displaced by the violence and began an official investigation into fresh attacks in Adamawa State’s Lamurde Local Government Area.
Senator Binos Yaroe’s motion, which expressed concern over coordinated attacks on the Kwa, Gyakan, Rigange, Waduku, and Tchobo communities, was adopted before the resolution.
The attacks, which are said to have been carried out by gunmen on motorbikes, have increased the level of insecurity in the area by killing a number of locals and displacing several more.
Yaroe presented a dire image of the situation in his lead debate, pointing out that despite continued security measures, the attackers “unleashed terror on defenceless residents.”
“Lawmakers are concerned that these attacks occur in spite of a dusk-to-dawn curfew and the presence of numerous security personnel in the area,” he stated.
The Senate ordered its Committee on National Security and Intelligence to conduct a thorough investigation into the situation “with a view to bringing an end to this conflict” because of the ongoing violence.
Lawmakers also instructed the National Emergency Management Agency to immediately provide relief supplies to individuals who have been evicted from their houses as part of a humanitarian reaction.
In remembrance of those who perished in the assaults, the chamber observed a one-minute silence.
Senator Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North) spoke to the discussion by calling the situation “very sad” and emphasizing that despite numerous interventions, the violence has persisted for years.
Yohanna stated, “I am fully aware of the state government’s efforts to bring peace to that area, but it has refused to go away over the years.”
He urged security services to step up their operations in the volatile communities and called for increased cooperation between federal legislators and the Adamawa State Government to maintain ongoing peace initiatives.
“They’ve been working hard in that field. We simply want to motivate and inspire them to accomplish more,” he continued.
The Senate unanimously approved all three of the motion’s petitions after discussions, indicating a fresh legislative effort to address the persistent insecurity in the impacted areas of Adamawa State.
