The Federal Government has begun paying outstanding salary arrears owed to members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors following the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the update was shared on April 14, 2026, by the association’s Publicity and Social Secretary, Abdulmajid Ibrahim, in a message sent to members.
He explained that the payments had already started reaching affected doctors, with some receiving arrears covering between one and six months.
Several doctors have also confirmed that they have received their payments, showing that the process is ongoing across different centres.
He noted that doctors who have not yet been paid should remain calm, as the disbursement will continue until all eligible members are covered. However, he explained that payments for the August portion of the arrears may take a little longer due to some administrative issues, which could cause a delay of about one to two weeks.
The salary adjustment under the CONMESS structure, which affects medical and dental officers in government hospitals, has for years been a source of disagreement between doctors and authorities. Delays in paying arrears and implementing new salary scales have previously led to strikes by resident doctors, affecting services in many public hospitals.
Resident doctors play a major role in Nigeria’s tertiary healthcare system, but they have continued to raise concerns about unpaid wages, poor working conditions, and the steady movement of doctors abroad in search of better pay.
