The police on Friday arraigned a 29-year-old man, Abubakar Sodiq, before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged stealing of window burglary guards valued at N1.2 million.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a three-count charge of stealing, breach of peace and malicious damage.
The Prosecutor, ASP Yomi Osuolale, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 21 and April 22 at about 2.00 p.m. at the Corper’s Lodge area in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant stole 16 window burglary protectors, two iron doors and four iron protectors, valued at N1.2 million, belonging to Mrs Adewuyi Oluwaseun.
Osuolale alleged that on April 22 at New Iyin Police Station, Ado-Ekiti, the defendant caused a breach of the peace by creating nuisance in the cell and attempting to escape lawful custody.
He also alleged that the defendant maliciously damaged a water closet in the cell, valued at N20,000, property of New Iyin Police Station.
According to him, the offences contravened Sections 302(1)(a), 181(d) and 353(1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
He urged the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Oluwafemi Alabi, urged the court to grant bail to the defendant, undertaking that he would not abscond.
The Magistrate, Mrs Olubunmi Bamidele, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
