The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, has officially commenced the distribution of relief materials to victims of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Building fire incident in Balogun Market, Lagos Island.
The flag-off ceremony, which held on Friday, 24 April 2026, at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos, marked a significant step in ongoing efforts to support affected persons and restore livelihoods following the devastating fire outbreak.
The Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, was represented by the South West Zonal Director, Mr. Saheed Akiode, conveyed the condolences of the Federal Government to the victims and their families.
He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to delivering timely humanitarian assistance and strengthening disaster preparedness, response, and resilience across the country.
Mr. Akiode noted that the intervention underscores NEMA’s mandate to coordinate effective emergency response in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, adding that the Agency remains resolute in supporting communities impacted by disasters.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, who represented the Governor of Lagos State, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its sustained support during emergencies in the state.
He emphasized the importance of sustained inter-agency collaboration, adherence to fire safety measures, strict enforcement of building regulations, and proper environmental management practices to mitigate future incidents.
Community representatives commended the prompt response of both the Federal and Lagos State Governments, pledging to embrace improved safety and preventive measures to reduce disaster risks.
The relief materials distributed comprised food items and essential non-food items aimed at alleviating the immediate needs of the affected victims and their families.(Source:NEMA, Facebook)
