The Plateau State Government has relaxed the curfew in Jos North Local Government Area, reducing restriction hours to 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. following what it described as an improvement in the security situation.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the adjustment was announced on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap.
Ramnap said the decision was reached after consultations with security agencies.
“In view of satisfactory improvement on the security situation in Jos North LGA and environs, the Plateau State Government, in consultation with security agencies, wishes to further relax the curfew imposed in the wake of recent disturbances,” she said.
The curfew was initially imposed after the March 29 attack on Angwan Rukuba, where gunmen reportedly killed more than 20 residents in an evening assault.
PrimeTimes Nigeria understands that the attackers moved through the community, shooting at residents before fleeing through nearby routes.
The incident triggered panic and led to a 48-hour curfew, which was later extended as tensions persisted.
In the aftermath of the attack, unrest spread to nearby areas, with fears of reprisals, protests, and disruptions to daily activities.
During a mass burial for victims, women and youths staged a protest, blocking access to the venue and demanding the release of three arrested community members.
The protest delayed the burial until the detained youths were eventually released.
The crisis also disrupted academic activities, with the University of Jos postponing examinations and restricting movement over safety concerns.
President Bola Tinubu visited the state days after the attack, promising to bring perpetrators to justice and strengthen security deployment.
Despite government efforts, sporadic attacks have continued in parts of Plateau, including Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South.
The incidents have raised concerns about the persistence of armed groups in rural and peri-urban communities.
The state government said the easing of the curfew is part of efforts to gradually restore normalcy. However, it warned that restrictions remain in force and must be strictly observed.
Ramnap urged residents to cooperate with security agencies.
She said citizens must “adhere strictly to the stipulated restricted period” and support ongoing security operations by reporting suspicious activities.
The government added that security agencies would continue enforcement while working to stabilise affected communities.
