On Tuesday, students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, organized a protest demanding quick action in response to ongoing welfare and academic issues impacting the campus community.
Large numbers of students marched and chanted in front of the institution’s main gate early in the morning during the demonstration, which was organized by the Students’ Union.
On camera, demonstrators were seen traveling in groups and carrying signs, all the while ensuring that the activity remained nonviolent.
The rally came after union members approved it at a congress that took place on Monday at Awo Café in reaction to persistent issues.
The leadership of the Students’ Union emphasized the commitment to non-violence in a statement issued by General Secretary Habeeb Oke Isa and President Adelani David.
The statement stated, “On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 6 a.m., the Students’ Union staged a peaceful demonstration with the intention of blocking major roads and gates leading to the campus until our demands are met.”
“The demonstration shall be conducted peacefully and in line with the known tradition of Great Ife students for orderly and nonviolent protests,” the statement continued.
The union noted that all members of the congress should maintain order while voicing their complaints, and students were encouraged to participate properly.
The demonstration coincides with mounting discontent over the institution’s e-portal upgrading delays, lodging issues, and transportation challenges.
The union rejected plans to relocate students from Awolowo Hall Blocks 7 and 8 for renovations in a separate statement released on April 25, calling the action ill-timed.
According to the statement, “the Union categorically rejected the implementation of such an evacuation without adequate notice, proper planning, or the provision of alternative accommodation for affected students.”
Many students have been unable to register for classes or obtain academic results weeks into the semester, according to the union, which criticized the current e-portal update.
The Students’ Union reaffirmed its dedication to nonviolent protest while cautioning that the administration of the university must act quickly to restore order.
