Nigeria and Türkiye have forged a strategic defence partnership with far-reaching agreements on military training, technology transfer, and operational support.
The agreements were reached during a high-level bilateral meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), and his Turkish counterpart at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence on Sunday, the meeting was described as a major milestone in advancing Nigeria–Türkiye defence relations.
The Nigerian delegation included the Chief of the Air Staff, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, the Defence Adviser, and other senior officials.
According to the statement, the partnership is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities while supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A key component of the agreement is the introduction of structured and scalable training programmes for Nigerian armed forces in areas such as special operations, counterterrorism, intelligence integration, counter-drone and counter-IED operations.
Both countries also agreed on the immediate deployment of Nigerian personnel to Türkiye for training, alongside language instruction and field exercises.
In a significant development, the two countries agreed to establish a major military training facility in Nigeria, to serve as a long-term centre of excellence.
On defence industry collaboration, both sides committed to technology transfer, maintenance training, and co-development initiatives aimed at boosting Nigeria’s indigenous capacity.
Türkiye also expressed readiness to provide advanced surveillance systems, unmanned platforms, and specialised military equipment tailored to Nigeria’s operational environment.
The agreement further covers enhanced border security through integrated systems, intelligence sharing, and coordinated responses to emerging threats.
Both countries also agreed to collaborate on disarmament and reintegration programmes for former combatants.
In the aviation sector, the partnership will strengthen maintenance systems, supply chains, and training to improve operational readiness, including support for helicopters and unmanned systems.
Naval cooperation will also be expanded, with Nigerian naval representatives expected to engage Turkish counterparts on maritime platforms and specialised training.
Speaking on the development, General Musa said, “The outcomes of this engagement mark a significant step forward in Nigeria–Türkiye defence relations.
“We are committed to delivering tangible, measurable results that strengthen our national security and advance the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
The ministry said the agreements will be implemented in phases, with immediate steps including training deployments, technical exchanges, and infrastructure development.
