President Bola Tinubu has sent a congratulatory message to Romuald Wadagni following his victory in the presidential election in the Republic of Benin.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that Wadagni, who currently serves as the country’s Finance Minister, won the election held on April 12 with a large number of votes, securing his emergence as president-elect.
In a message released on Thursday, April 16, President Tinubu said Wadagni’s victory shows the confidence the people of Benin have in his leadership and his past work in government. He also praised the conduct of the election, noting that it was peaceful and orderly.
The Nigerian leader further acknowledged the people and government of Benin for maintaining calm throughout the electoral process and staying committed to democracy.
Tinubu also spoke about the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Benin, pointing out their shared history, culture, and cooperation over the years. He expressed readiness to work with the incoming administration to build stronger ties between both countries.
He added that he hopes for deeper collaboration in areas such as regional security and economic growth within West Africa, especially under the platform of the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union.
The president wished Wadagni success as he prepares to take on the responsibilities of leading his country, assuring him of Nigeria’s support and willingness to cooperate.
He said: “Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation. I therefore look forward to working closely with your administration to strengthen our bilateral relations further, enhance regional security, and promote economic prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union.
“As you prepare to assume the onerous responsibilities of the high office of the Presidency, I wish you great wisdom, fortitude, and success. You can please rest assured of my unstinting support and cooperation in this regard.”
