Nigeria’s ongoing battle against crude oil theft recorded another tactical breakthrough as the Nigerian Navy dismantled a suspected pipeline vandalism network in Bayelsa State, arresting a key syndicate leader in a pre-dawn raid.
The operation, executed by personnel of Forward Operating Base Formoso, targeted Egbama-Angalabiri in Ekeramo Local Government Area—an area long associated with illicit oil activities within the Niger Delta.
In a statement issued by Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, the Navy described the operation as intelligence-driven and strategically coordinated.
“Acting on credible intelligence, our personnel conducted a raid which led to the arrest of a notorious syndicate leader known as ‘Idiot,’” the statement said.
The suspect, identified as Godwin, is believed to have played a central role in orchestrating pipeline vandalism and attacks on oil infrastructure in the Clough Creek axis.
His arrest at a local night market, where he was allegedly extorting traders, highlights the overlapping nature of criminal enterprises in the region, where economic sabotage often intersects with other forms of organised crime.
Following the arrest, naval operatives launched a follow-on operation to search his residence, leading to a confrontation with armed members of the syndicate.
“The personnel encountered resistance but swiftly brought the situation under control through a coordinated tactical response,” the Navy stated.
Recovered items included communication devices and technical tools used to coordinate illegal activities, underscoring the organised nature of the syndicate.
Further intelligence exploitation led to the arrest of an accomplice, identified as Happiness, and the recovery of a pump-action gun.
“This operation significantly disrupts the operational capacity of the syndicate,” the statement added.
The suspects have been transferred to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for prosecution, in line with inter-agency collaboration efforts.
The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal elements undermining Nigeria’s oil economy.
“We will continue aggressive operations to protect critical national assets and ensure economic security,” Folorunsho said.
