The Labour Party in Sokoto State has elected Yawale Abubakar as its new state chairman, with party leaders expressing optimism about strengthening its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The election took place on Saturday during a state congress held at the party secretariat in Sokoto, where delegates from all 23 local government areas participated in the process.
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Prof. Mahmud Muhammad, who announced Abubakar as the consensus candidate, described the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and credible, adding that it reflected the internal democratic values of the party.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, were present to observe the proceedings.
In his acceptance speech, Abubakar pledged to reposition the party in the state through expanded grassroots engagement, internal democracy, and inclusive leadership.
He criticised the state of governance in Sokoto, citing rising hardship, unemployment, insecurity, and increasing cost of living as signs of what he described as failed leadership affecting residents.
Abubakar said the party would intensify mobilisation across communities, adding that its performance in the 2023 elections showed that it could make stronger inroads in future contests.
He outlined plans to strengthen party structures, empower youths and women, and focus on issue-based campaigns as part of preparations for the next election cycle.
Also speaking, the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Aminu Umar, commended the conduct of the congress and urged the new leadership to ensure unity and accountability in the party.
The congress ended with the election of a full slate of state executives, as party members expressed renewed confidence in the leadership and direction of the Labour Party in Sokoto State ahead of 2027.
