The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, closed the party’s national convention held in Abuja on Tuesday, expressing confidence in the party’s 2027 presidential ambition.
Mark, a former Senate President, described the convention as an “excellent performance,” noting that despite his experience attending several conventions as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), none matched the organisation witnessed at the ADC gathering.
In his remarks, Mark commended the planning and execution of the convention, describing it as a benchmark for political gatherings in the country.
He expressed optimism about the party’s future, insisting that the ADC was on a clear path to winning power at the federal level.
“Today marks the beginning of our journey to the Villa, and all of you here are part of this history. By next year, when we move to the Villa, I will remind you again,” Mark said in his closing remarks.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the ADC National Convention climaxed with delegates voting overwhelmingly to amend the party’s constitution.
Announcing the results, Chairman of the Electoral Sub-Committee and former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, disclosed that 1,576 delegates were accredited for the exercise, with 11 votes declared void.
He said 1,471 delegates voted in favour of the amendment, representing 94 per cent of the total votes cast.
“Distinguished delegates, by virtue of this result announced, it means that the constitution of the African Democratic Congress has today been duly amended by this convention that took place at the Rainbow Event Centre, Abuja,” Ihedioha declared.
Key Resolutions Ratified Before Voting
Prior to the voting process, the Chairman of the Legal and Convention Processes Committee, Olumide Apata, led delegates in ratifying resolutions reached at the party’s 97th, 98th, and 99th National Executive Committee meetings.
The National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, outlined the major resolutions adopted by the party.
These included a waiver of membership requirements, the suspension of zoning provisions for executive positions, and the suspension of the rule mandating that vacant offices be filled by individuals from the same zone as their predecessors.
ADC Dissolves Nwosu-Led NWC
In a significant leadership shake-up, the party’s 99th NEC meeting dissolved the National Working Committee led by Ralph Nwosu with immediate effect.
The convention subsequently ratified the decision, paving the way for the David Mark-led National Working Committee to assume full control of the party’s affairs.
