The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday, April 26, blamed the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu for fears of violence after the opposition summit held in Ibadan on April 25, 2026.
This was made known in a press statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong.
The party said comments made by Oluseyi Makinde were wrongly described as a call to violence. It explained that the governor only used history as a warning.
The PDP said the reference to the old “wetie” crisis was meant to caution the government.
It stated that only those who feel guilty would see such a reminder as a threat.
The party noted that history shows what can happen when leaders ignore public anger.
The statement said Makinde warned that when “political greed” replaces good leadership, and people become frustrated, the result can be a serious crisis. It maintained that past events support this claim.
The PDP also claimed that the current political situation is similar to what led to violence in the past.
It said the actions of the APC show the same pattern and warned that repeating such actions is risky.
The party further said that when people are pushed too far, they react.
The PDP described the current system as moving toward “elected totalitarianism” and blamed the APC and the federal government for it.
The party also accused the APC of double standards. The PDP said that when the APC was in opposition, it made strong statements about making the country “ungovernable.”
The PDP argued that the ruling party now lacks the moral right to complain about a historical reference.
As maintained by the statement, opposition parties will continue to use legal means to resist what it called a move towards a one-party state.
The statement accused the APC of using pressure, threats, and unfair actions against opposition leaders.
Also, the PDP said that any violence before or after the 2027 elections should be blamed on the federal government, the APC, and institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It said these bodies are responsible for protecting democracy.
The PDP insisted that Nigerians can see who is responsible and said the APC’s claim of being a victim will not stand.
