The Federal Ministry of Works on Thursday dismissed a viral social media message alleging that manhole covers on Eko Bridge had been removed.
The message, which has been circulating online, claims that iron covers used to seal manholes on parts of the bridge have been stolen, posing danger to motorists and causing accidents.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olufemi Dare, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, that the claim was false and misleading.
He said: “It is not true. We have checked round.”
Dare urged Lagos residents to disregard the message, noting that it was capable of causing unnecessary panic among road users.
The controller advised motorists to continue using the bridge, but to drive carefully and obey traffic rules.
He specifically cautioned drivers against speeding, stressing the importance of staying within the approved speed limit.
The controller also warned individuals spreading false information to desist from such acts, describing them as mischievous.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Works, led by the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, to ensuring the safety of all federal roads and bridges across the state. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
