Brian McKnight is pushing back in court against reportedly damaging claims about his relationship with his late son.
In a lawsuit filed April 21, the singer accuses his ex-wife Julie, their son Brian Jr., and several media figures of spreading false allegations after the death of his son Niko, who died of cancer in 2025. McKnight takes issue with statements suggesting he failed to tell his son he loved him in his final days. The filing claims those accusations portrayed him as “emotionally cruel,” which he denies.
He claims that he respected Julie’s wishes regarding communication with Niko during his illness and disputes the narrative shared publicly. The lawsuit also targets interviews and coverage that repeated the claims, alleging they contributed to reputational and financial damage.
McKnight argues that his ex-wife breached a prior agreement that restricted both parties from speaking negatively about each other in public.
The case includes claims of defamation, emotional distress, and breach of contract, with McKnight seeking damages.
