The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a case filed against Senator Ireti Kingibe over her membership of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the case came up on Monday, April 20, 2026, but was not heard as scheduled. The judge, Justice Peter Lifu, fixed June 9, 2026, as the new date for hearing after the lawyer to the plaintiffs, I. G. Ogugwa, asked for more time. He told the court the matter was not related to pre-election issues and requested a longer adjournment.
Earlier in the case, on April 2, 2026, the court had refused to grant an urgent request to stop the senator from presenting herself as a member of the ADC. Instead, the judge directed that she be informed about the suit and be given a chance to respond to the claims made against her. The matter was then moved to April 20 for further proceedings, including arguments on pending applications and an objection filed by her lawyer, Marshall Abubakar.
The suit was filed by two officials of the ADC in Wuse Ward, Abuja. They are the ward chairman, Okezuo Kanayo, and the secretary, Isaiah Samuel. They approached the court through their counsel, Kolawole Olowookere, seeking an order to stop the senator from taking part in party activities until the case is decided.
According to their filing, the plaintiffs said the senator remains bound by the rules of the party despite holding a seat in the Senate representing the Federal Capital Territory. They claimed she was suspended on March 10, 2026, by the ward executive committee after accusations of acting against the party, misconduct, and taking possession of official ward documents.
The plaintiffs also told the court that the decision to suspend her followed the party’s internal rules and was supported by the majority of the ward executives. They alleged that despite the suspension, the senator has continued to act in the name of the party by holding meetings and releasing statements.
They further accused her of using her security personnel to put pressure on ward officials, a situation they said has caused disorder within the party structure at the ward level. The court is expected to hear all sides when the matter resumes in June.
