A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Fabiyi Oladimeji, has dismissed the viability of a joint presidential ticket between ex-presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi and former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections.
Oladimeji, who is the Deputy National Financial Secretary of the David Mark-led National Working Committee of the party, said the proposed alliance would not generate enough votes to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing journalists in Abuja, on Monday, he argued that voting patterns from the 2023 general election suggest the combination would fall short.
“Even Kwankwaso and Obi cannot give us the number, I am sorry to say this. The best number is Atiku and Obi,” he said.
He instead advocated a partnership between former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and Obi, describing it as the most viable path for the opposition.
According to him, the combined electoral strength of key opposition figures could shift the political balance.
“The total votes for the three of them was about 14 to 15 million, while the President got about eight million. If these forces come together, Nigerians will see the difference,” he added.
Oladimeji noted that some political leaders had already shown willingness to support a unified ticket.
He cited Atiku’s position to back whoever emerges, as well as similar sentiments from Rotimi Amaechi.
“Atiku has said he will support whoever emerges. Amaechi has said the same thing. We are expecting Peter Obi to also make that commitment because this is not about personal ambition; it is about rescuing the country,” he said.
