President Donald Trump is speaking out after his friend Tiger Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a crash in Florida.
“I feel so badly. He’s got some difficulties,” Trump told reporters on the tarmac at a Miami airport. “There was an accident, that’s all I know. He’s a very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man, but some difficulties.”
Woods, 50, was taken into custody Friday afternoon after his Land Rover rolled onto its side on Jupiter Island. Authorities said the golfer had been attempting to pass a truck when the crash occurred.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods showed “signs of impairment” at the scene and refused to provide a urine sample. The 15-time major champion was able to crawl out of the passenger side of the vehicle and was not seriously injured.
The incident adds to Woods’ long history of traffic troubles. In 2017, he was arrested in Florida after police found him asleep behind the wheel. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and said a combination of prescription medications had affected him. In 2021, Woods suffered severe leg injuries in a separate rollover crash in California.
Under Florida law, Woods could face up to nine months in jail, fines up to $2,000, and a suspended license if convicted.
