Gwyneth Paltrow’s past encounter with Harvey Weinstein is being revisited after the former Hollywood producer spoke about the actor during a new interview from prison.
Weinstein, who is currently being held at Rikers Island while facing ongoing legal proceedings, discussed the situation in a conversation published by The Hollywood Reporter. During the interview, he criticized Paltrow for speaking publicly about their interaction from the 1990s.
Paltrow previously said Weinstein summoned her to a hotel suite early in her career after casting her in the 1996 film Emma. She later described the meeting as uncomfortable and said the producer suggested massages and attempted to initiate physical contact. Paltrow said she rejected him and recalled that the situation became tense afterward.
Weinstein offered a different account in the interview.
“I walked out of a nice meeting with her and said, ‘How about a massage?’” he said. “And she just went, ‘No, I don’t think so.’ I got the message. I never put my hands on her.”
Paltrow has said she told her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt about the encounter. Pitt later confronted Weinstein at a public event, according to both accounts.
Years later, Paltrow spoke to reporters during the 2017 investigations that brought widespread attention to allegations against Weinstein. Reflecting on that moment, Weinstein said, “I won’t forgive her for that.”
