World Cup 2026 : Belgium outclass USA to end co-hosts’ dream

Belgium delivered a ruthless display of attacking football to defeat the United States 4-1 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending the co-hosts’ inspiring tournament run and booking their place in the quarter-finals. At a sold-out Lumen Field in Seattle, the Red Devils combined clinical finishing with relentless pressure to overpower Mauricio Pochettino’s side, whose historic campaign came to a painful conclusion against one of Europe‘s finest teams.

The atmosphere before kick-off was electric, with nearly 67,000 supporters hoping the United States could continue its remarkable journey. Having topped their group and claimed their first World Cup knockout victory since 2002 in the previous round, confidence was high among the home fans. Belgium, however, arrived unbeaten in 18 matches and quickly demonstrated why they remain one of the tournament favourites.

The warning signs appeared almost immediately. Goalkeeper Matt Freese was forced into an outstanding save inside the opening minute to deny Timothy Castagne, but the early pressure eventually told. In the ninth minute, Nicolas Raskin’s low cross found Charles De Ketelaere, who calmly finished from close range to give Belgium a deserved lead. The Red Devils’ high pressing and fluid attacking movement repeatedly unsettled the American defence during the opening half hour.

The United States responded with admirable determination. Christian Pulisic and Sergiño Dest began to find more space down the flanks, while Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie battled to regain control in midfield. Their persistence was rewarded in the 31st minute when Malik Tillman produced another moment of brilliance from a direct freekick. Curling the ball beyond Thibaut Courtois, Tillman drew the hosts level and ignited the Seattle crowd. It was his second direct freekick goal of the tournament and briefly shifted the momentum in America’s favour.

The celebrations barely had time to settle before Belgium struck again. Just two minutes later, Leandro Trossard delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where De Ketelaere rose highest to head home his second goal of the evening. The quick response underlined Belgium’s quality and restored their advantage before halftime, leaving the United States with another uphill task.

Any hopes of an American comeback suffered a major setback early in the second half. A costly mistake from Freese while attempting to clear the ball outside his area allowed De Ketelaere to dispossess him before Hans Vanaken calmly rolled the ball into an empty net. The goal stretched Belgium’s lead to 3-1 and highlighted the fine margins that often decide knockout football.

To their credit, the hosts refused to surrender. Pochettino introduced fresh legs from the bench, and substitute Sebastian Berhalter came close with a powerful strike that narrowly missed the target. Folarin Balogun also forced Courtois into a smart save late in the match, but Belgium remained composed defensively and rarely looked troubled despite the home side’s efforts.

As the United States pushed forward in search of another goal, Belgium delivered the final blow in stoppage time. Romelu Lukaku, introduced to provide fresh attacking impetus, capped the performance with a clinical finish after being set up by Vanaken, sealing an emphatic 4-1 victory and ensuring the scoreline reflected Belgium’s superiority on the night.

De Ketelaere was unquestionably the star of the match. His two goals, relentless pressing, and assist for Vanaken’s strike showcased his growing influence within the Belgian side. Vanaken also impressed with a goal and an assist, while Courtois produced key saves whenever the United States threatened to build momentum.

For the United States, defeat was disappointing but should not overshadow an outstanding tournament. The co-hosts topped their group, scored a record 11 goals in a single World Cup, and reached the knockout stages with an exciting blend of youth and experience. Players such as Tillman, Pulisic, Adams, and Chris Richards demonstrated that the future of American football remains bright despite this heavy defeat.

Belgium, meanwhile, continue to gather momentum at exactly the right time. Their attacking depth, midfield control, and defensive organisation make them genuine contenders for the world title. If they maintain the level of performance displayed against the United States, the Red Devils will head into the quarter-finals believing they have every chance of going all the way.
