What is Iran’s only condition to reopen Strait of Hormuz? Tehran says US pressure won’t work

Iran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s statement that the United States will keep the Strait of Hormuz open at any cost. Tehran has said the strategic waterway will not reopen under American pressure and that there is only one condition for normal shipping to resume.

According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, Iranian military spokesperson Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia said the Strait of Hormuz can reopen only if the rights of the Iranian people are respected. He added that no foreign country can force Iran to change its position through threats or military action.

‘US pressure will not reopen the Strait,’ says Iran

Akraminia said Iran will continue to protect its national interests and its rights over the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that if the US believes it can reopen the waterway through “aggression,” it is mistaken.

He also said Iran will decide how traffic moves through the Strait and warned that any arrangements made outside the framework set by Tehran would receive a strong response.

Iran accuses US of creating tensions

The Iranian military spokesperson claimed that although Iran had earlier proposed certain arrangements for the Strait, the United States later tried to create an alternative route, increasing tensions in the region.

He said Iran would continue to defend its control over the strategic maritime route and would not accept outside interference.

What did Donald Trump say?

On Monday, US President Donald Trump said he had once again ordered measures to counter Iran’s naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. He insisted that the waterway would remain open despite Iran’s objections.

Trump also announced that the US would act as the “guardian” of the Strait of Hormuz and proposed a 20% fee on all commercial cargo ships passing through the route to cover the cost of providing security.

Iran announces closure of the Strait

Meanwhile, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) announced that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, blaming recent US military actions in the region. The authority said commercial transit through the waterway is currently not possible because of the security situation.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping routes, with a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports passing through it. Any disruption in the waterway can affect global energy supplies and fuel prices.
