The United States has carried out another round of military strikes on Iran, targeting key military sites along the country’s southern coastline. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Tuesday that American forces completed a five-hour coordinated operation aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to CENTCOM, the strikes hit military installations in Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa and Bandar Abbas. The US military said precision-guided munitions were used to destroy Iranian coastal defence systems, missile launch infrastructure, drone positions and naval assets.

CENTCOM also shared a video of the operation, saying the mission was designed to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, with a significant share of global oil and cargo shipments passing through it.

What did Donald Trump say after the strikes?

Shortly after the military announced the operation, US President Donald Trump described it as “another major attack.” Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, Trump said the US would continue its military campaign against Iran.

“We’re hitting them very hard. And it’ll continue, and we’ll see what happens,” Trump said. He added that the US was “knocking out all of their offensive capability” and claimed American forces were now “controlling the straits” while restoring the blockade.

Iran confirmed that the strikes had taken place but did not immediately release any information about casualties or the extent of the damage.

Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest and most strategic shipping routes. Any disruption in the waterway can affect global oil supplies and international trade, making it a key focus in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.

Trump also said his administration was considering charging tolls for ships using the Strait of Hormuz, saying the US should be reimbursed for providing security in the region.

Meanwhile, the US military announced that it would resume its blockade of Iranian ports from midnight local time on Wednesday in Dubai, signalling that military pressure on Tehran is expected to continue.
