The conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that US forces struck two railway bridges leading to the holy city of Mashhad. The alleged attack came as Iran prepared for the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, whose body is expected to be laid to rest in the city.
According to the IRGC, the bridges were among the main transport routes to Mashhad, and the strikes were intended to disrupt arrangements for Khamenei’s final journey.
IRGC Says Bridges Were Deliberately Targeted
In a statement, the IRGC alleged that the United States carried out attacks across several parts of southern Iran while also targeting two bridges in the country’s east that connect to Mashhad.
The organisation claimed the strikes were aimed at affecting the funeral ceremonies and accused Washington of attempting to interfere with one of Iran’s most significant national events.
The IRGC described the United States as “treacherous” and warned that such actions would only strengthen the resolve of the Iranian people. It also vowed that the attacks would not go unanswered.
Railway Bridge Reportedly Hit in Golestan Province
Iranian media reported that the Aq Tekeh Khan Railway Bridge in Golestan Province was struck in the early hours of the day.
State news agency Mehr said a projectile hit the bridge, prompting emergency teams to reach the site. The IRGC’s regional Neynava Corps claimed the bridge was targeted by a US cruise missile.
No casualties have been reported so far. Officials said two explosions were heard following the strike.
US Says It Carried Out Additional Military Action
According to US media reports, citing an American official, two railway bridges in northern and north-eastern Iran were targeted.
Meanwhile, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had conducted additional military operations aimed at reducing Iran’s military capabilities and its ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM did not specifically comment on the IRGC’s allegations regarding the funeral route.
Iran Claims Missile and Drone Attacks on US Bases
Following the reported strikes, the IRGC claimed it had launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks on US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain.
The organisation said Arifjan Camp, Ali Al Salem Air Base, Juffair, and Sheikh Isa Air Base were among the targets. It described the operation as the “first punitive phase” of its response against the United States.
Massive Crowds Gather in Mashhad for Funeral
Iranian state media reported that millions of mourners have gathered in Mashhad for the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Authorities said roads around the city’s holy shrine have been largely closed to traffic due to the huge crowds and heightened security measures. According to official reports, Khamenei’s coffin arrived in Mashhad after funeral processions in Iraqi cities.
The mourning ceremonies are expected to continue throughout the day, while Mashhad Airport has been temporarily closed because of security arrangements and the arrival of official delegations.
