Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that the continued presence of US forces in and around the Strait of Hormuz could seriously disrupt global oil and gas supplies. The warning comes as tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated again, raising concerns over one of the world’s most important energy routes.

Fighting resumes, oil shipments affected

The warning comes after fighting between Iran and the US resumed. The US reportedly carried out strikes on IRGC military sites, while Iran launched retaliatory attacks on American military bases in Gulf countries.

The renewed conflict has once again affected oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway handles around one-fifth of the world’s oil trade, making it a key route for global energy supplies. Commercial ships have been attacked in the area before, including vessels with Indian crew members, increasing fears of long-term disruption to global energy markets.

What did the IRGC say?

In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the IRGC said that continued foreign military involvement could lead to major disruptions in the global oil and gas sector.

It added that removing the US military presence from the Strait of Hormuz is the only way to restore normal shipping traffic. The IRGC also warned that Washington’s actions could increase instability in international energy markets.

Trump proposes naval blockade and transit fee

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced plans to reintroduce a US-led naval blockade against Iran.

He also proposed a 20% transit fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz and said the US should take control of security in the area. According to Trump, the US should be compensated for protecting one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Iran rejects Trump’s proposal

Iran strongly rejected Trump’s proposal.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the idea, saying the proposed 20% transit fee was too high. He said Iran would remain fair in any future arrangements related to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran also repeated that it has sovereign rights over the waterway and accused Washington of trying to impose unilateral control over an international shipping route.
