United States President Donald TrumpDonald Trump has called on FIFA to award a future men’s World Cup exclusively to the United States, saying the country should host the tournament on its own rather than jointly with Canada and Mexico.
Trump made the remark on Friday during a FIFA World Cup reception at Trump Tower in New York ahead of Sunday’s 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
Addressing FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the US president praised the success of the tournament before urging the football governing body to return the competition to the United States as a sole host.
“You should choose the United States of America again. This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out,” Trump said.

He added that FIFA could first award the tournament to another host nation before bringing it back to the United States.
“Pick somebody else for the next one, and that will take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone,” he added.
Trump also revealed that Infantino had mentioned the possibility of a future World Cup jointly hosted by the United States and China.
“But Gianni also had another idea. He said we could do China and United States, so you have a nice short flight between games. The players would love that,” Trump said.
The next men’s World Cup available for bidding is the 2038 edition.
FIFA has already awarded the 2030 World Cup to Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the opening matches to be played in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay as part of the tournament’s centenary celebrations. Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 edition.
The United States is currently co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico, the first time the men’s tournament has been staged by three nations.
