The First Lady of Nigeria, , has intensified efforts to tackle hunger and child malnutrition through the expansion of community food banks and outreach programmes under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
The intervention was extended to Ondo State on Tuesday, as vulnerable residents benefited from the RHI Social Investment Programme Food Outreach Scheme held at the International Culture and Event Centre, Akure.
Represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima,, the First Lady said the initiative underscores a commitment to ensuring that vulnerable Nigerians, especially children, have access to nutritious food to grow and thrive.
She explained that the Food Outreach Scheme, launched in March 2024, is designed to support persons with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups by improving access to essential food supplies.
According to her, the programme is sustained through the contributions of donors who provide two truckloads of food items monthly, enabling the initiative to reach at least two states across the federation every month.
She identified the as one of the key donors, noting that the consignment distributed in Ondo State was provided by the organisation, alongside another anonymous donor.
Mrs Tinubu stated that the Renewed Hope Initiative complements the Renewed Hope Agenda of President by addressing food insecurity and promoting inclusive opportunities for all Nigerians.
She commended Ondo State Governor, , for prioritising the welfare of residents and supporting social intervention programmes in the state.
The First Lady also praised the governor’s wife, , for her commitment to implementing RHI programmes and supporting vulnerable communities.
In a brief remark, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the initiative as a reflection of the Federal Government’s resolve to alleviate poverty and improve living conditions.
He noted that the outreach represents more than food distribution, but a demonstration of compassion and shared responsibility towards the less privileged.
The governor commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for addressing critical social needs, while also acknowledging the support of the Federal Government in driving the programme.
He reaffirmed the state’s alignment with Federal Government initiatives, stressing that such interventions continue to benefit residents across Ondo.
Aiyedatiwa further linked the outreach to his administration’s “OUR EASE” development agenda, particularly its focus on social welfare and human dignity.
He assured that his government would sustain policies that enhance food accessibility and improve livelihoods in the state.
Addressing beneficiaries, the governor urged them to embrace the initiative as part of broader efforts to build resilient and self-reliant communities.
In her welcome address, Mrs Oluwaseun Esther Aiyedatiwa reiterated the state government’s commitment to the objectives of the Renewed Hope Initiative and pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government.
Represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Abosede Adelami, she described the outreach as a symbol of compassionate leadership and a practical response to the needs of the people.
She expressed appreciation to the First Lady for her sustained efforts in bringing relief and hope to vulnerable Nigerians, particularly women, children and persons with disabilities.
In a goodwill message, the Managing Director of ASR Africa, , said the organisation remains committed to supporting interventions that uplift communities and promote social development.
He explained that ASR Africa, founded by Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Group, provides annual funding to initiatives in health, education and social welfare aimed at improving lives across Africa.
