Strait of Hormuz closed? Here’s why LPG cylinders are still reaching homes without any shortage in India; Know here

Tensions between Iran and the United States have increased again, raising concerns about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This has led many people to wonder whether India could face a shortage of LPG cylinders, petrol, or diesel.

For now, the answer is no. LPG supply across the country remains normal, and gas cylinders are being delivered to homes on time.

Why is there no LPG shortage?

Over the past few years, India has reduced its dependence on a single country or shipping route for oil and gas imports.

The country now buys crude oil and gas from several nations, giving it multiple supply options. Because of this, the current tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have not affected domestic LPG supplies.

The government and oil companies are closely monitoring the situation and can use alternative sources and routes if needed.

Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil and natural gas.

According to media reports, around 25% of the world’s crude oil and 20% of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) pass through this route.

If the waterway remains closed for a long period, global oil prices could rise sharply, affecting the prices of petrol, diesel, LPG, and other fuels.

However, shipping has not stopped completely. While there are some security concerns, the supply chain is still functioning.

How is India getting LPG?

India imports oil and gas not only from Gulf countries but also from Russia, the United States, and African countries.

Countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE also have pipelines and ports that help move supplies without relying entirely on the Strait of Hormuz.

India also maintains adequate reserves of LPG and crude oil. If required, government oil companies can continue supplies through other ports.

As a result, there is no shortage of LPG cylinders in the country, and consumers are not paying any extra for gas cylinders at present.

Will the tensions affect India?

If tensions continue for a long time or the Strait of Hormuz is completely disrupted, global oil and gas prices may increase.

Since India imports a large share of its energy needs, higher international prices could eventually affect the country.

However, the government has built strategic petroleum reserves and is working to diversify energy sources to handle such situations.

At present, there is no need to panic. LPG cylinder supplies remain normal, and there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas in the market. The government continues to monitor the situation closely.
