The Senate has chided the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over his call on the United Nations to investigate the kidnap incident at Oriire Local Government Area of the state as well as the rescue operation that led to the release of the abducted students and teachers.
NPO Reported that Makinde had in a state broadcast on Monday evening said there is a need for independent scrutiny on the abduction and circumstances of its resolution.
The Oyo governor called on the appropriate international human rights and accountability mechanism, including those within the United Nations system to closely examine the facts surrounding this abduction and the circumstances of its resolution.
Reacting to Makinde’s call for UN probe during its plenary session on Tuesday, the Senate warned the governor against making statements that could undermine ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies in tackling terrorism and kidnapping.
The motion for Makinde’s caution was raised by the former Edo state governor and current lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District, Sen. Adams Oshiomole.
This was seconded by Senator Aniekan Bassey, who represents Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.
While commending the security agencies for securing the release of the victims, the Senate hailed President Bola Tinubu for directing the Armed Forces and other security institutions to deploy all necessary resources to ensure their unconditional freedom after they were kidnapped by heavily armed terrorists on May 15, 2026.
The red chamber noted that the mission reflected the growing professionalism, operational efficiency and inter-agency coordination among the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies and other security institutions involved in the operation.
However, lawmakers acknowledged the casualties recorded by the security agencies during the operation.
The deceased personnel as identified by the Senate include Lieutenant F.A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Senate also recognised Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who sustained injuries while participating in the operation.
In the same vein, the red chamber expressed sadness over the abducted teachers who died while in captivity.
Consequently, the Senate urged the Federal Government to ensure the prompt payment of all statutory death benefits, insurance claims, pensions and other entitlements due to the families of the fallen security personnel.
