The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), has called on the Attorney General of the Federation to ensure swift prosecution in the case of the enforced disappearance of John Chukwuemeka Anozie.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, RULAAC welcomed the Inspector-General of Police’s reported compliance with a Federal High Court judgment directing that the investigation file, legal advice, and report on the case be forwarded to the AGF.
According to the applicant’s counsel, Mr. Vincent Adodo, counsel to the IGP informed the Federal High Court, Abuja, on 24 July 2026 during proceedings in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/865/2025: Engr. Nnenna Anozie v. Inspector-General of Police, that a Notice of Compliance had been filed confirming transmission of the case file to the AGF.
RULAAC described the development as “an important, albeit long overdue, milestone” in a case that has come to symbolize enforced disappearance, police impunity, and denial of justice in Nigeria.
Background of the Case
Mr. John Chukwuemeka Anozie was allegedly abducted from his residence in Lekki, Lagos, on 15 June 2017 by operatives of the now-defunct Awkuzu SARS Unit. More than nine years later, his whereabouts remain unknown.
His wife, Mrs. Nnenna Anozie, and their children have continued to endure “unimaginable anguish, uncertainty, and emotional trauma,” RULAAC said.
The group commended the Federal High Court for insisting on compliance and saluted Mrs. Anozie “for her courage, resilience, and unwavering pursuit of justice despite years of official delay and obstruction.”
While noting that transmitting the file is only part of the court’s judgment, RULAAC urged the AGF to; promptly review the investigation report and legal advice from the police, institute prosecution without delay of all officers indicted in the abduction and disappearance.
The demand also included that noone should be shielded from accountability, regardless of rank or influence and keep the victim’s family informed and ensure a transparent, victim-centered process
RULAAC called on the IGP to comply fully with the remaining court orders by; oroviding Mrs. Anozie with a Certified True Copy of the duplicate investigation file, arrest and hand over all indicted officers to the AGF for prosecution and pay the damages awarded by the court to the applicant
According to RULAAC,“this case is more than an individual tragedy. It is a defining test of Nigeria’s commitment to the rule of law and its obligations under domestic and international law to investigate enforced disappearances and provide remedies to victims.”
It adds: “For nearly a decade, Mrs. Nnenna Anozie and her family have waited for answers, truth, and justice. The Attorney General now has a historic opportunity and a solemn responsibility to ensure this case proceeds to prosecution without further delay. Justice delayed for so long must not be allowed to become justice denied.”
