Cristiano Ronaldo’s hope of lifting the prestigious FIFA World Cup has been dashed as Spain secured a narrow 1-0 win against Portugal.
In a fierce Round of 16 contest between the two European giants at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo, on Monday evening, led the Portugese national team against Spain.
Both teams however pulled a square fight, holding each other to goalless draw.
The game advanced to the second half with managers of both sides making tactical changes.
The changes however yielded for Spain as second-half substitute, Mikel Merino, dented Ronaldo’s hope of lifting the title which has eluded his impressive career.
Merino’s goal late in the 91st minute saw Spain edge past Portugal to advance to the quarterfinals where they will face winners of the Round of 16 match between the United States and Belgium.
