The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said he may not be alive to contest the poll, alleging that the government is frustrating his activities and targeting opposition figures.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, which media personality Chude Jideonwo posted on social media on Wednesday.
Responding to a question on whether there was a possibility he might not be a candidate in 2027, Obi said he might not even be alive, let alone a candidate, adding that every single thing he does for a living, the government deliberately frustrates, and that there was even a possibility he would not survive if the opportunity presented itself.
He, however, clarified that he was not making direct accusations but was describing what he experiences daily in the form of obstruction.
He said it wasn’t an accusation but something he knows firsthand, explaining that he faces frustration every day, doing things that ought to be normal but no longer are.
He said the government would never come out directly to admit responsibility, but that its hand could be seen in virtually everything.
Asked whether the government was att@cking him personally, the former Anambra State governor said the alleged treatment extended to members of the opposition generally, insisting that everyone in opposition is being att@cked personally, including himself, adding that even things he should ordinarily be entitled to are being withheld from him entirely.
Obi cited an incident at an airport where he claimed officials locked his car despite other vehicles being parked in the same area.
He said when he identified himself, the official in charge said he didn’t care, and that when he pointed to the cars of other people nearby, he noticed the officials whispering among themselves as though questioning who he was.
He further alleged that some people now avoid publicly associating with him for fear of becoming targets themselves, saying people he knows at the airport no longer greet him out of that fear.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also claimed that some supporters had discouraged him from attending family events, saying he has received wedding invitations from people asking him not to attend.
Obi did not provide evidence to support his allegations during the interview, and the Federal Government had yet to respond to his claims as of the time of filing this report.
