Pakistan news: 12 soldiers killed after explosive-laden vehicle hits military post

A deadly terror attack on a joint police and security forces checkpoint in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province killed 15 people, including 12 Pakistani soldiers, two policemen, and one forest department official, officials said. The attack took place on Thursday night in the Tank district, where terrorists first tried to storm the checkpoint before carrying out a suicide-style vehicle bombing. Security forces later launched an operation in the area.

What happened at the security checkpoint?

According to Pakistan’s military media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a group of terrorists attempted to breach the security of the joint check post. Security personnel successfully resisted the initial assault.

After failing to enter the facility, the attackers drove an explosive-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall of the checkpoint. The powerful blast caused extensive damage to the security post and resulted in heavy casualties among personnel stationed there.

Who was killed in the attack?

The ISPR said the explosion killed 15 people, including 12 Pakistani soldiers, two police personnel, and one government official from the forest department.

During the exchange of fire, security forces also killed 12 terrorists, according to the military. A sanitisation operation is continuing in the area to ensure that no attackers remain and to secure the site.

What action have authorities taken?

Following the attack, Tank Deputy Commissioner Jamshed Khan imposed Section 144 across the district and announced a daytime curfew from 6 am to 6 pm until further notice. The restrictions aim to prevent further security threats and allow security forces to carry out operations.

Emergency services, including police, ambulances, rescue teams and the fire brigade, have been exempted from the curfew. Residents have been asked to avoid unnecessary travel and cooperate with authorities.
