Nigerian rising tennis star Oluwaseun Ogunsakin has clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the Men’s doubles event at the Wimbledon Junior Championships after an impressive victory on Wednesday.
Ogunsakin teamed up with Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin to defeat their American opponents.
The African youngsters beat the duo of Safir Azam and Vihaan Reddy in the junior doubles competition.
The African pairing dominated the opening set 6-1 before their opponents fought back to claim the second set 6-3.
However, they stormed back decisively in the tiebreak with a commanding 10–1 victory.
Their comeback sealed a massive win, marking a breakthrough moment for African representation on the prestigious Grand Slam stage.
The win marks another significant milestone for Ogunsakin, who continues to make history with his impressive run at one of tennis’ most prestigious junior tournaments.
In the Men’s Junior singles event, Ogunsakin was the only African that got to the qualifying and final rounds.
The 17-year-old beat Canada’s Benjamin Azar in straight sets to secure his spot in the main draw.
However, he lost the first-round matchup against Britain’s Oliver Page
The Nigerian who is the first Nigerian to win a Grand Slam main draw since the 1990 Australian Open will now shift his focus to the doubles quarterfinals as he aims to continue his remarkable campaign at Wimbledon.
