The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) kicks off a bold new financial chapter, with league champions set to pocket a record N1 billion prize money.
National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko announced the massive payout, which organizers designed to boost the league’s commercial appeal, sharpen competitiveness, and draw fresh investment into Nigerian club football.
The 2026/27 season launches on the weekend of August 27-29, following a productive joint stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja that brought together the National Sports Commission, Nigeria Football Federation, NPFL officials, and club owners.
The campaign runs through May 28, 2027, and organizers integrated President Federation Cup fixtures to create a more streamlined domestic calendar.
Enugu Rangers enter the new season as defending champions after they clinched their ninth NPFL title in the 2025/26 campaign. The Flying Antelopes now sit level with Enyimba as the most successful clubs in league history, both boasting nine titles.
Other historic winners include Shooting Stars (5 titles), Heartland FC (formerly Iwuanyanwu Nationale, 5 titles), Kano Pillars (4 titles), and Dolphin FC (3 titles).
Four newly promoted side Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees, and Doma United join the top flight after earning promotion from the Nigeria National League.
They replace the four relegated clubs from the previous season and will battle established powerhouses for silverware in what promises to be one of the most lucrative campaigns yet.
This enhanced prize structure and structured scheduling signal the NPFL’s determination to elevate Nigerian club football on both domestic and continental stages.
