Nnamdi Kanu’s personal physician arrested in Enugu, lawyer claims

Martin Aghaji

Aghaji is said to have been facing persecution from security forces since issuing an independent report on Kanu’s health condition, allegedly conflicting with that of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ejimakor, Kanu’s former special counsel, wrote on X Saturday that the legal team was weighing in on the arrest.

“Yesterday, Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, MAZI NNAMDI KANU’s personal physician was arrested at his residence in Enugu. This is the height of the official harassment he has been facing since he issued the medical report that did not comport with the DSS’s medical report on #MNK. The legal team is weighing-in at the moment,” he wrote.

Human rights lawyer Maxwell Okpara also raised the alarm over Aghaji’s arrest in a statement.

Okpara urged the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and civil society organisations to intervene and demand Aghaji’s release.

Okpara said in the statement: “Information has reached me that Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, the medical expert who reportedly issued independent medical reports on the health condition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on 3rd July, 2026.

“Prof. Aghaji’s reported medical assessments were said to have countered the official medical report presented by the Department of State Services, DSS.

“We call on the Nigerian Medical Association, Nigeria Bar Association, Civil Society Group and other relevant authorities to ensure that due process and the rule of law is strictly observed and nobody should be intimidated for speaking the truth.”
