A lesson teacher accused of repeatedly defiling a 15-year-old student in Lagos has been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, a development that comes after concerns that the case could be derailed following allegations that the victim’s family was pressured to abandon the matter.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the suspect, identified only as Michael, was arraigned before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court and ordered into custody pending further proceedings. The case has been adjourned until August 24.
The remand marks a significant turn in a case that had drawn public attention after the survivor’s mother alleged that some police officers attempted to persuade the family to accept ₦200,000 and discontinue the prosecution.
Confirming the latest development, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said the suspect had now been formally arraigned before the court.
Adebisi said, “The suspect has been arraigned before the Ogudu Magistrates’ Court and remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.”
He added that the matter had been adjourned until August 24.
The command had earlier maintained that the case remains active despite reports suggesting otherwise. According to Adebisi, the complaint was lodged at the Ketu Police Station on July 13, after which the suspect was arrested and detained the same day.
She explained that plans to arraign him were interrupted when he reportedly collapsed on July 15 while preparations were underway in the presence of the teenager and her mother.
Adebisi said the suspect was first taken to the Lagos State Emergency Hospital at Toll Gate before being transferred to Gbagada General Hospital for further treatment.
The hospitalisation had fuelled anxiety among observers who feared the suspect might evade prosecution.
The alleged victim’s mother, Mrs Zainab Musa, had earlier accused unnamed police officers of encouraging the family to settle the matter privately in exchange for ₦200,000, an allegation the command said is unsubstantiated.
Police insisted throughout the period that the investigation was ongoing and assured that the suspect would face trial once he was medically fit.
The case has also attracted the attention of civil society groups. Subsequent to the reports of the suspect’s hospital admission, the founder of the DOHS Cares Foundation, Ololade Ajayi, urged the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to ensure the prosecution was not abandoned and that justice was pursued to its logical conclusion.
According to earlier accounts of the incident, the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted the teenager on several occasions inside a tutorial centre in the Ketu area and threatened her against disclosing the incidents.
With the suspect now in custody by court order, attention is expected to shift from questions over whether the case would proceed to how swiftly the judicial process will determine the allegations before the court.
