The Lagos Government says it is intensifying efforts to tackle flooding across the state through infrastructure improvements, environmental enforcement and public sensitisation.
Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), said this on Saturday in Lagos while speaking with journalists after an inaugural meeting with Secretaries to the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Salu-Hundeyin said the recent inspection of flood-prone areas by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and members of the State Executive Council underscored the administration’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to the challenge.
She said the government was assessing critical drainage channels and other vulnerable locations to strengthen ongoing flood control measures.
Salu-Hundeyin, however, attributed much of the flooding to human activities, particularly illegal construction on waterways and indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels.
“We all live in Lagos and we all experience flooding. Government is not indifferent to the situation.
“But residents also have a responsibility. People should stop blocking drainage channels and building on natural waterways because such actions worsen flooding,” she said.
The SSG urged residents to support government efforts by keeping drainage channels free of refuse and complying with environmental regulations.
She said the government had intensified enforcement of environmental laws, including prosecuting offenders caught dumping refuse indiscriminately.
Salu-Hundeyin expressed confidence that with sustained government intervention and public cooperation, the state would continue to make progress in addressing flooding and safeguarding lives and property.
She reiterated the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring a cleaner, safer and more resilient Lagos. NAN
