The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead as reconstruction of the failed expansion joint on the Kara Bridge (outbound Lagos) along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway begins on Tuesday.
The Lagos Sector Command said the repair work, being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works, is expected to last for two weeks and is aimed at improving road safety and preserving the structural integrity of the bridge.
Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, said the existing four-lane carriageway would be reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to create a safe working environment for construction workers.
“The reconstruction is a critical safety intervention aimed at preventing crashes, preserving the structural integrity of the bridge, and ensuring safer travel for all road users,” Hamzat said.
He warned that the temporary lane reduction would lead to traffic congestion, particularly on the outbound Lagos-Ibadan corridor, and appealed to organisations and businesses with flexible work arrangements to allow employees to work remotely during the construction period.
“This measure will significantly reduce vehicular traffic and relieve commuters of unnecessary delays and stress,” he said.
Hamzat also urged motorists to avoid peak travel periods where possible and make use of alternative routes, including the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway and the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
He cautioned road users against driving against traffic or violating traffic management measures.
“Motorists are urged to exercise patience, drive cautiously, obey traffic officials deployed along the corridor, and strictly comply with all traffic advisories throughout the construction period,” he said.
“Offenders who drive against traffic or violate established traffic management measures will be apprehended and sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations.”
The FRSC said it has deployed traffic personnel and operational resources in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, traffic management agencies and other emergency responders to minimise disruption, maintain traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists and construction workers.
The command appealed for patience and cooperation from road users, describing the temporary inconvenience as necessary to deliver a safer and more durable Kara Bridge.
