Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung has alleged that members of the National Assembly demanded a ₦200 million bribe from him during his first budget defence while serving under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Dalung made the allegation during a recent interview, where he reflected on his experience in public office and the challenges he faced while presenting the ministry’s budget before lawmakers.
According to the former minister, the demand was allegedly made shortly after he assumed office, with some legislators reportedly expecting financial inducements before approving the ministry’s budget proposal.
Dalung claimed he rejected the alleged request, insisting that public funds should be used solely for government projects and programmes rather than personal interests. He said his refusal to comply created tension between him and some members of the National Assembly, making the budget approval process more difficult.
The former minister maintained that he remained committed to transparency and accountability throughout his tenure, despite what he described as intense political pressure.
His comments have renewed public debate over allegations of corruption and unethical practices within Nigeria’s budget process. While accusations of inducement during budget deliberations have surfaced in the past, such claims often generate widespread discussion about accountability and transparency in public institutions.

Dalung served as Minister of Youth and Sports Development from 2015 to 2019 under the Buhari administration and was involved in overseeing several national sports and youth development initiatives during his time in office.
