Federal High Court mourns Justice Baba Gana Ashigar

A judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria , Hon. Justice Baba Gana Ashigar Rtd, has passed away at the late hours of July 25, 2026 after a brief illness.

The death of Justice Baba Gana Ashigar was announced by the Federal High Court, expressing regrets over the demise of the retired jurist.

Director of Information, Federal High Court of Nigeria, states that His Lordship passed away in Maiduguri, Borno State, and has been laid to rest on the 26th of July, 2026 in accordance with Islamic rites.

Hon. Justice Baba Gana Ashigar, Rtd, was described as a distinguished jurist who served with diligence, dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the administration of justice.

“His substantial contributions to the Bench and the legal profession will be fondly remembered by his colleagues, members of the outer Bar, Court Staff, and all who had the privilege of working with him.

“The Chief Judge, Judges, Management, and Staff of the Federal High Court extend their heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Baba Gana Ashigar who was born in Dikwa, Borno State on October 1, 1957 was appointed as a judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria on June 22, 2009. Before his appointment to the Federal High Court, he worked in education, legal drafting, academia, and the Borno State judiciary.

He earned a Diploma in Sharia and Civil Law from the Borno State College of Legal and Islamic Studies, an LL.B. from Bayero University, Kano, and attended the Nigerian Law School before being called to the Nigerian Bar and later to the Bench.

Justice Baba Gana Ashigar retired from the Federal High Court in October 2022, after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 65 years. His valedictory session was held in Maiduguri, Borno State, on November 12, 2022.
