FAVOUR Comprehensive College has won the 2026 Secondary Schools Football Tournament organised by Mr Olukayode Afeni, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Comptroller, in Idiroko.

The command’s spokesman, Chado Zakari, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Saturday in Idiroko.

Zakari stated that the inaugural inter-secondary schools football tournament, organised by the command’s Area Comptroller in collaboration with Jonnyyeko College of Health Science and Technology, ended on July 24.

He said that 12 secondary school teams from the border region participated in the competition, which lasted for more than two weeks.

Zakari said the tournament was organised as part of the command’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to engage youths productively, promote unity and discourage illicit activities, including smuggling, along the border corridor.

He quoted Afeni as saying during the closing ceremony that the initiative was designed to use football to mentor students, promote their development and help them realise their potential.

“Educational authorities, youth associations and border community leaders rallied behind the initiative to promote education and steer young individuals away from dangerous smuggling activities,” he said.

According to the statement by Zakari, cash prizes, educational materials and sports equipment were presented to the winners, runners-up and outstanding individual performers.

“Okanlawon Al-Amin of S.S. International School emerged as the highest goal scorer with four goals, while Olawale Saoban of Favour Comprehensive College won the Best Goalkeeper award.

“Rigobert, from Holy Childhood Academy was named the tournament’s Best Player.

“The successful completion of the 2026 tournament marked a milestone in youth development and sports diplomacy in the Idiroko border area, with plans for future annual editions,” Zakari said in the statement.

He added that the grassroots sports initiative was established to nurture young athletic talent, promote education and use sports as a tool for crime prevention and social transformation among youths in the border communities.(NAN)
