THE Television Academy on Wednesday unveiled nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, with several unexpected omissions and surprise contenders dominating discussions ahead of the September ceremony.
Former Emmy winners Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach of The Bear were among the biggest acting snubs, despite the series securing a nomination in the Outstanding Comedy Series category.
Also missing from this year’s acting nominees was Sheryl Lee Ralph, whose performances in Abbott Elementary had earned her Emmy recognition in recent years.
Reality competition veteran The Amazing Race failed to receive a nomination for the first time in more than a decade, while Dancing With the Stars returned to the category after a lengthy absence.
Among the surprise nominees were Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Megan Stalter for Hacks and Chase Infiniti for The Testaments, reflecting the Television Academy’s recognition of emerging performances.
The drama series Your Friends & Neighbors also secured an unexpected nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, despite attracting relatively few nominations in other categories.
The nominations were announced by Emmy winners Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller ahead of the awards ceremony scheduled for Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Actor Mariska Hargitay will host this year’s ceremony, which will be broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
The Emmy Awards honour excellence in American primetime television programming and are presented annually by the Television Academy.
