Ouida Books, one of the leading publishing companies in Africa has released On Close Examination, a novel detailing chilling accounts of a cancer survivor whose growth and journey to adulthood were marked by the combined forces of horrendous childhood experiences and marital conspiracies.
The author, Gloria Chinyere Ukwu, officially authographed copies in Abuja on Saturday at book reading session after the book was officially released on June 30.
According to Lola Shoneyin, Chief Executive of Ouida Books, On Close Examination is “an intimate and searing account of self-discovery.”
The book release marks a major literary milestone for the prominent Nigerian cancer advocate and four-time breast cancer survivor whose journey toward reclaiming her personality who splashes her memoir across the 324 pages of the book.
The author takes her readers through a series of childhood challenges that millions of children go through; some surviving while some had their lives permanently destroyed as a result.
But On Close Examination tells how the author navigated her way from the oppressions of the traditions, parental tyranny and other forms of inhibitions to adult independence only to be jolted by cancer.
The book therefore combines accounts of childhood trauma, cultural pressures, attempts to escape from the clutches of tradition all down to the ultimate battles when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Going under the knives four times over breast cancer could not have been a story for the faint-hearted. But the author flaunts herself as what a review described as “testament to resilience.”
The author is the Head of Programs at Project Pink Blue—one of Nigeria’s leading cancer advocacy organizations.
