7.4-magnitude earthquake hits Mexico’s coast, triggers tsunami warning

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chiapas, southern Mexico, on Friday, triggering a tsunami warning and sending strong tremors across parts of Central America.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred near the city of Puerto Madero at a depth of 10 kilometres. Because the quake was shallow, it caused stronger shaking in nearby areas.

Tsunami warning issued after the earthquake

Soon after the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning for parts of the region. Officials warned that dangerous sea-level changes and strong ocean currents could affect nearby coastlines.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised people in coastal areas to stay alert and follow official safety instructions.

Tremors felt in Guatemala and El Salvador

The earthquake was not limited to Mexico. Strong tremors were also felt in neighbouring Guatemala and El Salvador.

In Guatemala City, buildings shook as the earthquake struck. People in El Salvador also reported feeling the tremors, according to Reuters.

No immediate reports of major damage

There were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries, or major damage after the earthquake. Emergency teams and local authorities are continuing to assess the affected areas and monitor for any aftershocks or tsunami-related risks.

Officials are expected to provide more updates as inspections continue.
