The Strategic Border Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko , Ogun, on Friday appealed to Nigerian youths to resist peer pressure on hard drugs intake.
Mr Olaniyi Ekundayo, the Commander of the NDLEA Special Area, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Idiroko.
He gave the advice as the world commemorates the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
NAN reports that the World Drug Day is observed globally on June 26 every year.
The theme for the 2026 commemoration is: “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges and Innovative Responses.”
Ekundayo stressed that the special day provided an opportunity to sensitise the public, especially the youth, to the dangers of drug abuse and encourage healthy lifestyles.
According to him, drug abuse can result in psychological, social and emotional problems and, in some cases, lead to untimely death.
“We are using this opportunity to remind Nigerians to live healthy lives and desist from drug and substance abuse.
“The youths must avoid drugs because they can create psychological, social and emotional problems and sometimes result in premature death.
“We appeal to those who have not started using drugs to avoid experimentation and curiosity that may lead to drug abuse,” he said.
Ekundayo urged people already abusing drugs and substances to seek professional help through qualified counsellors for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
He also appealed to parents and guardians to sensitise their children to the dangers and risks associated with drug abuse.
The Special Area Commander further commended all tiers of government for their interventions in the fight against drug abuse and urged them not to relent in efforts to combat the menace.
He stressed the need for sustained public enlightenment, community participation and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to address drug abuse in the country. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
